Well, I posted off my essay on assisted suicide and Christian ethics which finished off the first module of this my final year of ministerial training. Last Tuesday we began Biblical Studies which looks at the New Testament in the light of eschatology and ethics. I have already chosen my main essay topic for this module as I couldn't resist the opportunity to get to grips with Paul on Justification. This is going to be a great subject to study and I've got all the books I need. I'm following my tutor's recommended line of reading and here it is in order:
1. First read Romans and Galatians through for myself.
2. Read Paul Among Jews and Gentiles by Krister Stendahl.
3. Read Paul: Fresh Perspectives by N T Wright.
4. Read The Future of Justification by John Piper.
5. Justification: God's Plan and Paul's Vision by N T Wright.
Then if I have time some E P Sanders and Ben Witherington before getting stuck into the commentaries on Romans by Dunn and Moo. By which time (middle of January) I should be able to answer this question: 'How does St. Paul believe that we are justified and what does he mean by this, and how does this affect our understanding of the teaching and mission of the Church?'
Great stuff!

Love that picture, Andy! (It's now on my desktop.)
I rather envy you having a real reading list, with a goal at the end of it! I have a long list of books to read myself, but without a supervisor checking up on me, or any definite goal, I neglect it horribly!
Studying theology forces you to look at things you probably woundn't normally go into in any detail. But occassionally something comes up like this which I'm really looking forward to. I showed the assignment to my diocesan mentor and he said it made him wish he was back at college!
Glad you liked the photo.
